I sit alone in a hired car on my way to the train station in Amsterdam…

The bustling city is completely still,

The bike paths empty and undisturbed,

The canals are silent; even the water sleeps,

The darkness is a surrounding repose, like the presence of a long past relative walking with you one more time,

The street lights are mirrored in the puddles on the brick roads, framed against rows of iconic townhouses.

The nights were filled with jazz, the days with London rain,

The autumn air was pleasantly chilled; cafes bustling with tourists looking for warmth,

It was a stoic place filled with culture and tortured artists; a place my soul resonated.

Only two nights in Amsterdam, experiencing everything and hardly anything all at once,

The rain races across the window to the riffs of jazz in my headphones.

I sit alone watching the sun rise on a train leaving Amsterdam.
